Changing Music on an Instagram* Post After You Publish

Changing Music on an Instagram* Post After You Publish

For feed posts and carousels, yes: Instagram* announced a Replace Audio option in the Edit menu on 21 July 2026. For Reels and Stories, music generally cannot be changed after publishing, so the fallback is deleting and re-uploading. The rollout is gradual, so update the app and check your Edit menu.

Forgetting to add a track is common, and the old answer was always "delete and repost", which loses likes and comments. That has started to change for photo posts. Below is what is reported for each format, the steps, the limits and what to do if the option is missing.

What works for each format

FormatAdd or change music after posting?Notes
Feed photo postYes, where Replace Audio is availableLikes and comments stay
CarouselYes, where availableSame Edit menu
ReelGenerally noDelete and re-upload
StoryNoStories expire after a day

Instagram* announced Replace Audio on 21 July 2026 and rolled it out gradually to updated app versions, so confirm it in your own Edit menu.

Steps for a feed post or carousel

  1. Open your profile and the post you want to change.
  2. Tap the three dots at the top right.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Look for Replace Audio or a music option and select it.
  5. Choose a track from the library and, if offered, set the part of the song to play.
  6. Save the changes.

Instagram* says the post keeps its likes, comments, shares and reach after the change, and that a new track does not give the post any ranking boost. If you do not see the option, the rollout may not have reached your account, so update the app and check again over the next days.

Can you add your own music?

The in-app tool uses Instagram*'s licensed library. The replace tool works with tracks from that library, so if you want a sound of your own on a post, plan to delete and repost it. For your own recordings, such as a song you wrote, add the audio when you create the post, using the option for original audio.

Remember licensing: music from outside Instagram*'s library may be blocked, muted or removed for copyright reasons, especially on business accounts, which have a limited music catalog.

What to do if the option is missing

  • Update the app. New tools arrive with updates.
  • Check the account type. Business accounts may see fewer music choices.
  • Wait. Phased rollouts reach accounts at different times.
  • Archive and repost. Archive the old post, then upload a new one with music. You will lose the likes and comments, so decide if it is worth it.
  • Make a Reel instead. For video content with music, a Reel is the format built for it.

Reels: why music is fixed

Reels build the audio into the video at creation. To change it, you would normally need to make a new Reel. If the Reel's audio is a saved track, you can use the "use audio" option to make another Reel with the same sound. Don't count on swapping the sound of a live Reel unless Instagram* announces it.

Stories

Music is added in the Stories editor before sharing. Once the Story is live, it cannot be edited for sound. Because Stories disappear after a day, the easiest fix is to post a new one.

Does music help reach?

Using popular licensed tracks may help a Reel feel current, but there is no proof that music alone raises reach for feed posts. The signals that matter are watch time, shares and saves. If you add music, choose one that fits the mood, and keep captions and visuals clear even with the sound off, since many people watch silently. Our guide on how Reels views are counted covers what counts.

How to choose a track that suits the post

Pick music that matches the mood of the picture and the pace of the swipe. For a carousel, a calm instrumental track works well because people spend time on each slide. For a product post, a light, upbeat track draws attention without covering the message. Test the track with the sound off: if the post still makes sense, the music will only add to it. Avoid very loud openings, which can make viewers swipe away, and avoid tracks that were everywhere last month if you want your post to feel fresh.

Business and creator accounts may see a different music library from personal ones because of licensing. If a track is not available, you might choose royalty-free or original audio. Using copyrighted music outside the licensed library can lead to muted audio or removal. Keep a note of any tracks you upload yourself and make sure you have the rights to use them.

How it works at LikeMan

A clip with a good soundtrack can still start at zero. Our Instagram* views need only the address of a public post, never a login. A quote appears before payment, work starts when payment lands and a dip across the year ahead is made good. Views move a counter and do nothing for the song or the content. If you are tidying your own account first, see how to unarchive a story or post, and find the other services under Instagram*.

FAQ

Is it possible to add a song once a post is live?

For feed posts and carousels, yes, via Replace Audio once it has reached your app. For Reels and Stories, generally no.

Does editing the music remove my likes?

No. Instagram* says likes, comments and reach stay after replacing audio.

Can I use my own song?

Add it when you create the post. The replace tool uses the in-app library.

Why can't I see Replace Audio?

The rollout is gradual. Update the app and check again later.

Conclusion

You may be able to swap music on a published feed post or carousel from the Edit menu, while Reels and Stories still need a new upload. Update the app, check the menu and keep licensing in mind.
