YouTube 4,000 Watch Hours: How the Requirement Works and What Counts

YouTube 4,000 Watch Hours: How the Requirement Works and What Counts

To earn from ads today, a channel needs a thousand subscribers together with four thousand hours of qualified public viewing across the past year. Time on Shorts does not count toward those hours, because Shorts have a separate route. From 1 February 2027, YouTube says, new applicants will need eight thousand.

"How many watch hours to monetize YouTube" has a short answer and several traps. The hours must be public and qualified, they come from a rolling year, and not every view counts. This guide explains each rule, shows a table of what counts, covers Shorts, flags the reported change and shows how to track your progress.

The current requirement

YouTube's partner program overview describes the entry for ad revenue like this:

RouteSubscribersWhat must be reachedPeriod
Long videos1,0004,000 qualified public hoursRolling 12 months
Shorts1,00010 million qualified Shorts playsRolling 90 days

There is also an earlier level with lower numbers for fan funding. Reaching a number does not mean automatic acceptance: channels are reviewed, an active Community Guidelines strike blocks an application and a rejected channel waits before reapplying.

What are public watch hours?

"Public" means watch time on videos that are set to public. "Qualified" means the hours meet YouTube's own eligibility checks, which the page does not spell out in detail. Practical points:

  • Time watched on private, unlisted or deleted videos is excluded.
  • Views coming from ad campaigns are excluded.
  • The window rolls: hours from more than 12 months ago drop out.
  • Hours are counted for long-form videos; Shorts follow their own measure.

Do Shorts count towards watch hours?

No. According to the overview, plays in the Shorts feed do not add to the 4,000 hours. The Shorts route asks for ten million qualified plays in 90 days. The two measures do not add together: you must meet one route on its own. A channel with a few hours of long video and a lot of Shorts will not combine them.

This matters for planning. If your channel is mostly Shorts, the 10 million route may fit better; if you make longer videos, build watch hours. The piece on subscribers needed to get paid puts the routes side by side.

The 2027 change

On 10 August 2026 YouTube announced, in a blog post about partner program updates, that applicants who want ad revenue will need a thousand subscribers plus eight thousand qualified public hours over the past year, or twenty million qualified Shorts plays over the past quarter.<!-- checked: 2026-10-15, https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-partner-program-updates-2027-new-opportunities-earn/ --> It begins on 1 February 2027. Channels already in the program are not subject to the higher entry bar. If your channel is close to 4,000 hours now, the arithmetic says to apply before the date, because afterwards the same goal needs twice the viewing time.

How many hours is that in practice?

Divide the hours by the average length of a view. At five minutes per view, 4,000 hours is 48,000 views; at ten minutes it is 24,000. At an 8,000-hour bar, each figure doubles. For this reason keeping people watching beats chasing sheer view counts: a longer average view lowers the number of views you need.

Average viewViews needed for 4,000 hoursViews needed for 8,000 hours
3 minutes80,000160,000
5 minutes48,00096,000
10 minutes24,00048,000

What does not help your hours

  • Leaving a video playing on several devices. YouTube treats repeated plays like that as low quality.
  • Auto-play loops in your own tabs. They inflate nothing that counts.
  • Reuploading the same video. It splits your audience instead of adding hours.
  • Private or unlisted uploads. Their viewing time is excluded.
  • Traffic from your own ad campaigns. It is excluded, so judge your organic hours separately.

A month-by-month plan

Suppose you have 1,000 subscribers and 1,200 qualified hours, and you want 4,000 within a year. You need roughly 2,800 more, about 233 a month. If your videos average five minutes per view, that is about 2,800 views a month. Plan the content: how many videos per month, which ones are evergreen and which depend on timing. Evergreen videos keep adding hours long after publication, so a library of ten solid tutorials can deliver a steady monthly baseline. After each month, compare your actual hours with the plan, and adjust.

Who is closest to the bar, and who is not

Channels with a niche audience and long videos often reach the hours faster than channels with many short entertainment clips, because each view lasts longer. A channel with high subscribers but weak viewing may reach the subscriber threshold first and wait for hours, while another with strong viewing may do the opposite. Check which of the two numbers is your bottleneck, and spend your effort there.

How to track your hours

Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, choose the last 365 days and look at watch time in hours. The Studio monetization page shows your progress toward the thresholds once you are close. Check monthly, and compare the hours gained each month to see whether you will reach the goal in time. Keep in mind that hours drop out of the window as time passes, so a quiet month can lower your total.

Ways to build watch hours honestly

  • Open with the answer and cut dead air to raise retention.
  • Use chapters and clear titles so viewers find the part they want.
  • Group videos into playlists that carry viewers onward.
  • Publish consistently so older videos keep being found.
  • Read retention graphs and repair the seconds where viewers drop off.
  • Avoid sources of traffic that do not count, such as ad-campaign views, if your goal is eligibility.

Can an SMM panel supply watch hours?

Searches for "SMM panel YouTube watch hours" assume so. No service can promise qualified public watch hours, because YouTube decides what is qualified and excludes artificial traffic under its rules on fake engagement. Orders labelled watch time may not count, and they can put a channel at risk. Put the effort into videos people finish, and treat any offer of guaranteed hours as a warning.

Frequently misunderstood points

"Watch hours are the same as views." They are not: a view can last seconds, and an hour is sixty minutes of viewing added up across many people.

"My hours reset every year." They roll. Each day, hours from exactly a year ago drop out, so you need to keep adding.

"Subscribers alone qualify me." You need the hours or the Shorts plays as well, and a review follows.

"I can combine Shorts and long video." The routes are separate; you must meet one on its own.

How it works at LikeMan

Counters near zero put some newcomers off. Our YouTube views start from the link to an open video, and your Google login never enters the picture. The sum is quoted in advance, the order begins when payment lands and any fall in the coming twelve months is replaced. Bought views are not qualified watch hours, so they cannot count toward eligibility. More services are listed on the YouTube page.
